The Peony Bloom die set is another Birch Press layering die set. It is slightly different to the others that I have used, as it cuts a picture rather than an abstract design. I decided to do an inked background to add interest as the rest of the elements are very simple.

hand made Mother's Day card with die cut peony flowers and inked background.

To Make the Card

Cut and fold a piece of white card to make a 10.8cm x 14cm card base that exactly fits the die set. Cut a piece of watercolour card to the same size. Smear some of each of the green ink pads on a craft mat and spritz with water. Dip and drag the watercolour card through the ink to cover it. Set the ink with a heat gun and repeat the process until you are happy with the cover. lightly spritz the inked card with water and blot with a dry cloth to create lighter spots. Dip a thin paint brush in the darkest ink and spatter over the card to create darker spots. Adhere the finished and dried background to the card base.

Die cut the three layers from two shades of pink card and the top layer from white card. Glue the layers together and adhere over the inked background.

Cut a strip of white card and stamp with the Mother’s Day greeting. Adhere this across the centre of the card using adhesive foam pads.

I really like the extra interest that the inked background creates. I also like the way the die cut flowers look almost as though they are painted. It was tempting to cut the top layer in pale pink but preferred the stronger contrast of white in the end.
