I love the look of silhouette stamping, however, it would be easy to think the effect too dark for Christmas cards. As Santa’s deliveries take place at night on Christmas eve, it is easy to build a card design around that. A sprinkling of fine glitter brings some sparkle to the card and adds to the magical feel.

Hand made Christmas card with silhouette stamping

The Background

You can use a piece of plain coloured card for the background, as long as it is not too dark. I prefer an inked background as I feel the blended colours give the impression of texture. A mix of Distress and Distress Oxide ink pads was used, applied with a foam ink blending tool. I graduated the colour from dark to light from the top down. You can find a list of the colours that I used below. A die cut circle held in place with stencil tape, creates a mask for the moon shape. You could spatter the inked area with water and blot with kitchen paper to create the appearance of falling snow. Another option is to spatter with white acrylic paint, just be sure to do this before you stamp the scene at the bottom!

The Silhouettes

The beautiful silhouette stamped scene at the bottom of the card comes from a single stamp. This is one of many designed by Francoise Read for Woodware, you can see more of her Christmas designs here. Use a good quality black ink pad to ensure a crisp, dark image. Santa and his reindeer are die cut from black card which gives the same effect as silhouette stamping. Fine glitter all over the dotted areas of the stamp and on trees and rooftops adds sparkle and a snowy effect.

For the final touch, stamp the Christmas greeting in black on a piece of card inked to match the background. The greeting stamp and main image are from the same set.

I love the way the card turned out. It is a good example of how to use silhouette stamping for Christmas cards. Thank you for visiting, I hope you like it too. You can find links to all the products used in the list below. Please leave a comment if you have a moment, to let me know what you think.
