Hi Everyone, a couple of weeks ago, I needed to make a birthday card for a young man. I wanted something quite grungy so decided to use the Mechanics 3D embossing folder. I also wanted a kind of rust effect background, which I made using Distress Oxide ink pads.

Hand made birthday card with distress oxide inked background and double embossed cogs.

To Make the Card

Start by making the rust effect background. Cut a piece of watercolour card to 10cm x 14.25cm. Take the three colours of Distress Oxide ink pads and smoosh one of the colours on to your craft mat, spritz with a little water, then dip and paddle your card into it. Dry the ink with a heat gun. Repeat this process with the other colours until you are happy with the result. Dry emboss the piece of inked card with the Mechanics embossing folder, make sure that the raised design is on the inked side of the card.

Gently swipe over the raised parts of the embossed design with a clear, embossing ink pad. Sprinkle with gold embossing powder, shake off the excess. To add to the grungy effect, use your finger to rub away small areas of the embossing powder. Use a heat gun to set the embossing powder. Ink around the edges of the card with Vintage Photo ink.

Take an A6 kraft card blank and layer it with turquoise card, then add your inked and embossed card. Die cut a shaped strip of kraft card and stamp the Happy Birthday sentiment using Vintage Photo ink. Ink around the edges of the sentiment strip with Vintage Photo and adhere to the card using adhesive foam pads to raise it up.

I am happy with the end result, I like the grungy finish but feel that it’s not too dark. I hope you like it too, thank you for visiting, please leave a comment if you have a minute. All the products used are linked below.
